Reading Workshop
Mini Lesson:
“Readers, also, take our ideas through a process of drafting and
revision. And just as we have an internalized sense for the qualities of good
writing that guides us as we draft and revise in writing, we also need an
internalized sense for the qualities of a good interpretation so we can draft
and revise our ideas about the texts we are reading.”
Guided Practice: Question 3

Writing Workshop
Mini Lesson: “Today I want to teach you
that although there are oodles of things we can
think
about as we develop our characters, there are just one or two things that
we must
think. Specifically, I want to teach you that every fiction writer needs
to know
what his or her characters want, what they yearn for, and what keeps
these
characters from getting what they want. I also want to teach you that
when we
know what our characters yearn for, we don’t just come right out and
say it.We
show what our characters want by putting examples of this into little
small moments, into what
fiction writers call scenes.”
Guided
Practice:Read Aloud Ali Baba page 48-52 Then ask the students what does David
Bernstien want, and how what part of the text did the writer use to explain
what things are in the way of David’s party
Highlight
these pieces in text. And display for
students
Independent
Practice: Today
I want you to go back and re read your writing piece and create a bubble map
that describes what the main character wants, what is in the way, an example of
how the author did not just tell us right away.
