READING

Objective: I will be able to apply my ability to infer small parts of a story to comprehend the big idea.
Mini Lesson

“Readers, you are all writing about big ideas and big questions. And today I want to teach you one incredibly important bit of advice. The writer, Richard Price, has said, ‘The bigger the issue, the smaller you write.’ He means that when you are writing about big ideas, you stop and stick with  your ideas in the smallest details and objects from the story.”

Guided Practice

Watch Pigeon Impossible Video
(Box.net/flashdrive)

Active Listening: On your white board write down 3 small details, that help you understand the big issue in the movie.

Turn and teach your partner one small moment

Create an Anchor chart of small moments

Independent Practice

Next Steps: Today when you are reading I want you to pay attention to the small moments because the often are the places we find evidence to support our thinking. ( Question 2 passage Response)

Strategic Groups:
AR progress and planning

 LUNCH
Objective: I will be able to write about one 20 minute part of my writing with great detail and expression

Mini Lesson
Now that you’ve mastered the art
of zooming in on one twenty-minute moment and telling that well, you’re
ready to try expanding and includingmore time in your stories. Often, writers
put a couple of moments that are close in time together, adding either a clear
build-up or follow-up to the heart of the story. Once you’ve picked amoment
you want to write as a story, you can ask, is there another moment, either
soon before or soon after this one, that will help my reader see the importance
of this moment in my life?

Guided Practice

 Watch Pigeon Impossible
Active Listening: On your whiteboards write down a list of what is happening in the movie. Then discuss with a partner how long did all this take? 5 min 2 days
Why did the author chose to focus on such a small part of the day? What does that tell us about the authors purpose?

Independent Practice

When you write today I want you to focus on writing about one small 20 minute part of your story that really connects to the purpose of your piece.
